This high-fantasy TV series is a page-turner, quite literally, as it’s based on the bestselling novels by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The story unfolds in a realm where a group of young villagers finds themselves tangled in a prophecy – one of them could be the all-powerful Dragon Reborn, a figure who holds the fate of the world in their hands, for better or worse.
Guiding them on this fantastical journey is Moiraine, a mysterious woman who’s part of a magical order known as the Aes Sedai. Together, they tackle all sorts of challenges, from the nefarious Dark One, a sinister force itching to break free, to the Seanchan, an invading army with a knack for enslaving magic users. Plus, there’s no shortage of inner conflicts and hidden secrets as they unlock their own powers and destinies.
Now, let’s talk about the small screen adaptation. The first season of “The Wheel of Time” hit Amazon Prime Video on November 19, 2021, packing in eight thrilling episodes. Critics and fans gave it a nod of approval, praising the cast, the top-notch production, and how faithfully it stuck to the source material. Oh, and it drew in quite the crowd, becoming a hit and one of the most-watched original series on Prime Video.
The second season was already greenlit before the first one even aired, back in May 2021. This time, it’s drawing inspiration from the second book, “The Great Hunt,” and sprinkling in some elements from the third book, “The Dragon Reborn.” The second season made its grand entrance on September 1, 2023, kicking things off with a bang by dropping three episodes at once, followed by a weekly release every Friday.

Plot
Season 2 of “The Wheel of Time” picks up right where the first season left us hanging. Rand al’Thor, our unsuspecting hero, has just discovered that he’s the Dragon Reborn, a figure destined to either save or doom the world. It’s a heavy load to carry, especially after his showdown with Ishamael, whom he mistakenly thinks is the Dark One.
Rand decides to hit the road, leaving his friends and allies behind. Why? Well, he’s grappling with his own growing power and the creeping madness that comes with it. He believes he’s protecting them, but as you can imagine, it’s a bit of a tearjerker for everyone involved.
Moiraine and her trusty Warder Lan aren’t about to let Rand go on his own, though. They’re hot on his trail, ready to guide him through this tumultuous journey.
But wait, there’s more! Nynaeve, Egwene, Perrin, and Mat – Rand’s loyal buddies – they’re in for their own set of challenges and destinies as they’re separated from the Dragon Reborn.
Meanwhile, the Dark One is still cooking up trouble. He’s got his eyes set on Rand, wanting to either turn him to the dark side or take him out of the equation entirely. To prevent the Dark One’s grand escape plan – which involves an army of Trollocs, Myrddraal, Draghkar, Darkfriends, and the Forsaken – Rand and his gang need to track down the Horn of Valere, a legendary artifact that can summon heroes from the past to fight for the Light. Sounds epic, right?
But, of course, they’re not the only ones with their sights set on the Horn. Various factions and forces are in the mix, each with their own agendas and schemes.
And that’s not all! Season 2 introduces us to a bunch of new faces and places. We’ve got Elayne Trakand, a royal with a ton of responsibilities; Min Farshaw, who can catch glimpses of the future; Selene, a mysterious lady from an alternate world; Verin Mathwin, another Aes Sedai joining Moiraine’s mission; Loial, an Ogier who befriends our heroes; Padan Fain, who goes from darkfriend to something even darker; Logain Ablar, a false Dragon with a complicated past; and a host of exciting new locations, like Tar Valon, Fal Dara, Cairhien, Toman Head, Falme, and many more.
Budget
The Wheel of Time” isn’t just a regular TV series; it’s a blockbuster. The first season, if you can believe it, reportedly rang up a bill of around $80 million for production. That’s a hefty price tag, and Amazon Prime Video wasn’t shy about investing in it.
But guess what? They went all-in for Season 2. According to Vernon Sanders, the co-head of TV at Amazon Studios, they upped the ante. He said, “Wheel Of Time is one of our most expensive shows that we’ve ever made,” and that they’re “spending more in season 2 than season 1.” So, it’s like they’re turning the dial up to eleven!
What does that mean for fans? Well, it means they had the resources to pull out all the stops. Elaborate sets that transport you to another world, jaw-dropping costumes that make you feel like you’re in the story, mind-blowing visual effects that’ll have your eyes glued to the screen, epic action scenes that get your heart racing, and breathtaking locations that take you on a global adventure.
And speaking of locations, they didn’t just stick to one place. Nope, they traveled all over the map to give you the most immersive experience possible. From the Czech Republic to Croatia, Slovenia to Spain, Scotland to France, Italy to Morocco, and even New Zealand – they crisscrossed the globe to make sure every frame was a visual treat.
